"I am the JJ Abrams of Gundam." - Harutoshi Fukui, Writer of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and Actual Fascist, Not Quite Realizing What he is Saying
For the first five episodes, Gundam Unicorn looks like it's going to be one of the best Gundam shows ever made. Returning to the days of the early Universal Century and the conflicts between the Federation and Zeon after Char's Counterattack so definitively had the final word on the themes of that time is a risky prospect, but within the first three episodes, Unicorn genuinely feels like it will justify its existence by responding to and developing the themes of Char's Counterattack, suggesting that maybe, just maybe, that film was wrong and that there…

The dead speak!
On the whole, pretty great. But. As my love for Char's Counterattack goes up, my love for Unicorn goes down. CCA really is an ideal finale for UC Gundam. The story has been told, the messages expressed, and we're left on an open page, the future has not been written, but things will change. But then, not unlike with Advent Children, the ambiguity is undone when Unicorn comes along and says "No, things stayed the same, but maybe a little worse" and promises us that the Federation and Zeon will be at war forever. War in the Pocket is proof you can tell great stories within the established canon, while Unicorn... well, I get that it's a…

Review by MSC_836 ★★½
Basically, everything good about it comes from its UC connections/fan-services, but as such, everything bad about it also comes from its UC connections - by setting itself to be not just a sequel to the UC works, but a SUPER DIRECT one (merely 3 years after the events of Char's Counterattack), Unicorn ends up contantly inviting itself to be compared to Tomino's works, and very unfavorably in my eyes. Even Tomino himself would set his novel, 'Hathaway's Flash' - written immediately after he finished working on Char's Counterattack because the man just couldn't stop working at that time - to be a more relaxed 12 years after CCA, so that new things and new people, and from there a new…

I'm going to see the big Gundam in front of the mall a few months from now, and I wanted to know why it was the Unicorn one.

Review by The Lybrarian ★★
With beautifully animated hand drawn mechs looking as good as they ever have; it’s a shame then that the series becomes bogged down in its own self importance, dull characters and a complex maguffin plot stuffed full of sci fi cliche that drags endlessly for a 7 hour episode run.

i'm going to speak carefully here, because i feel as if i just say how i really feel in a blunt manner i'd break the terms of service. yes, inside all of us is post-columbine pre-911 comedian, and Oh They're Saying It.
i've seen a lot of people in recent times compare unicorn to star wars: rise of skywalker because it is a "conclusion" (big emphasis on air quotes there) to a decades old story that relies heavily on recycling moments from the previous stories and not really contributing anything new. i suppose they're not entirely wrong, but i think there's a problem with recency bias. rise of skywalker may have ruined star wars for the foreseeable future (how many…

The greatest Gundam show ever made, but dear lord don't let this be your first Gundam show. That would be like starting the MCU with Civil War. Like, you can, but you'd be missing the point.

Review by River__S ★★★½
The thing about Gundam Unicorn is it's both trying to re-work and retool classic Gundam imagery (similar to force awakens let's say) while also trying to be an investigation into what classic Gundam is, what it meant in the cultural zeitgeist and what it was originally trying to say (again, there's a last jedi parallel there)
So how that functionally ends up panning out is most episodes are structured around 1 or 2 lavishly animated set pieces that call back to classic Gundam moments and then a bunch of scenes of characters standing around discussing the world of Gundam. The writer Fukui stated that he initially wanted the story to be about someone who had grown up on a colony…
