If you received an error message from Sea of Thieves that states “There is a missing or corrupt data file that is required for the game to run.” then this page may be able to help you resolve this.
There are a wide variety of reasons why the game install might get corrupted, or that the data loaded by the game might be corrupted.
Removing the corrupted file
Please try removing the corrupted file, if the file name in the error is always the same when you try to launch:
- Boot the game and take note of corrupt file from your screenshot (For example: Core_9ef849ee)
- Right click Sea of Thieves from your Games list in Steam.
- From the context menu select 'Properties'.
- From the 'Local Files' tab click 'Browse Local Files'.
- Once viewing the game files for Sea of Thieves navigate to Athena > Content > Paks.
- Using the search bar in the top right hand corner, search for the file which is corrupted (Core_9ef849ee) and then delete that file.
- Return to your properties window for Sea of Thieves, then again from the Local Files section select 'Verify Integrity of Local Game Files...'
- Once complete, restart and test the game.
Anti-Virus Issues
You could try whitelisting the game with your anti-virus product. There are known compatibility issues with some antivirus products that we are working with the anti-virus vendors to resolve. If you experience an issue with a specific product, please let us know.

To whitelist Sea of Thieves, navigate to the game’s installation folder from within the whitelist page of your antivirus product. To get the installation folder, press Win+R on your keyboard and type Powershell and press Enter. Then enter this command:
Get-AppxPackage *SeaOfThieves*
Or if you are having issues with the Pioneer version of the game:
Get-AppxPackage *Wasserburg*
It should print out several lines. You can copy the Installation Location value from the start of C:\ to the end of the line by highlighting it with your mouse and then right-clicking in the window to copy it. You can then paste this into the Open Dialog by pressing in the text field at the bottom and pressing Ctrl+V then pressing Enter. From here you should navigate by double-clicking the folders for Binaries then UWP64, then finally selecting SotGame.exe, which is the executable you need to whitelist.
Note: This process will need to be done each time the game is updated should your antivirus conflict with our game.
Store install issues
We are aware that in some extremely rare cases the Microsoft Store may itself corrupt a game install. We are working with the various teams within Microsoft to resolve these issues. If you experience this, please raise a support ticket by clicking on the "Raise a Support Request" button at the bottom of this page.
Unstable Overclock
We have confirmed that certain users may experience game crashes if they are overclocking their machines. This may have been automatic by your motherboard manufacturer or done manually by yourself. If you experience issues, we recommend you restore your CPU and memory to stock settings and perform a full reinstall of the game. Corruption can occur during the installation, as well as when the game is running.
If you manually overclocked your machine, as well as checking the usual settings, you could try increasing your “AVX Instruction Negative Offset” or the equivalent for your motherboard. As with all overclocking, you modify these settings at your own risk. If you are not sure what this is, this is not relevant to you.
Old version of Windows
You may be hitting a bug or issue with an older version of Windows. We recommend ensuring you are up to date in Windows update.
Buggy or faulty drivers
You may experience issues with game installs if you have drivers that are causing corruption. These issues may be difficult to detect, so we advise ensuring you have the latest drivers. If the problem only recently started, you could try rolling back to an earlier version of the driver.
Incompatible software
Some third-party software attempts to inject itself into every process on your machine and has been known to cause crashes.
If you have recently started experiencing the issue, we recommend uninstalling any recently installed software.
Faulty hardware
This is always the worst-case scenario, but the most likely candidates for faulty hardware are hard drives or SSDs that are nearing the end of their life.

Do I have to be running Windows to play?
\nYes. For this game to work, users must be running the Windows operating system.
Is the Steam version included in cross play?
\nYes! Players will be able to crew up and play together regardless of which platform they’re on, so those already playing on Xbox and Windows will be able to play with friends on Steam.
Will game progress carry over to Steam?
\nYes! Your ranks, cosmetics and currency will all be there after you sign into your Xbox Live account, meaning you’ll be able to pick up exactly where you left off. Previously earned achievements will automatically unlock on Steam too.
Will this game be locked to 30 frames per second?
\nNo. FPS will be uncapped.
Do I get the game for free on Steam if I already own it?
No. Players on Xbox and Windows will not receive an entitlement to a free Steam copy. However, cross play breaks down barriers by enabling new Steam players to crew up easily with existing players on Xbox and Windows.

\nUpdate graphics drivers
\nWhen your graphics drivers are either not up to date or suffering from some form of corruption, this can also cause the crash while booting. We recommend that when trying this step that you completely remove you old drivers before updating to the latest versions. To remove your old drivers and then update to the latest:

- Scroll down the list and find your graphics driver \n
- Click the driver once and selectuninstall.Confirm this by clickingUninstall again. \n
- Once complete reboot Windows \n

\n - Install to the latest driver and then reboot your PC again \n

\nIf you are using the Nahimic app, try disabling it. To do that:

- Press the tab \"Services\" \n
- Search for \"Nahimic service\" or press 'n' to fast search \n
- Disable the check mark, to disable it. \n

- Check no VPN is present as this could be causing a conflict with the game \n
- Check your antivirus is not causing a conflict with the game. Most notable Trend Micro Internet Security has been known to cause conflicts. \n
- Check MSI afterburner is not causing conflicts with the game. \n
- Check a 'Readyboost' USB stick is not in use. \n
If you are experiencing an issue where your controller is not functioning within the Windows / Steam versions of Sea of Thieves, please try the following:

- Check whether your controller is working for another title from within the Microsoft Store / Steam.

\n - If the controller is working within other titles from those Store, you may need to perform a reset of your Sea of Thieves data. To do this:

- Plug the controller in.

- Click it to expand the dropdown list.
- Right Click your device, again for this example it is Xbox 360 Controller for Windows
- Select Update Driver and choose Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software

If you are having issues signing in to Xbox Live on the Steam client which may also include receiving a crash during this process, attempting to circumvent this error by signing out of Xbox Live and then back in again during the boot sequence will solve the issue in some situations.

But if selecting 'Yes' does not resolve the issue then you must delete some Xbox Live tokens which can be found in the Credentials Manager. The steps required are detailed below:
- Click the Start button from the bottom Left corner of Windows and type Credentials Managerthen press Enter.
- Once viewing the Credentials Manager, click the Windows Credentials button.
- Find Entries labelled Xbl_Ticket
- Left click any with1717113201 in the name and select Remove

\n5. Open the Trend Micro main console by right-clicking on the Trend Micro icon in your taskbar and selecting Open the Main Console
\n6. Open the Settings Menu
\n7. Select Exception Lists and then Programs/folders
\n8. Click the + Add button and then Browse
\n9. Paste the results fromStep 4into the File name box
\n10. Click the Open button, this will add the path your Exception List
\n11. Click Apply then OK to save your changes & close the Exception Lists window
\n\nStill can’t play?
\nAn important Sea of Thieves file may have been locked away in quarantine, in order to restore this file please follow the steps below.
\n1. Open the main console on your Trend Micro Security software then click theSecurity Reporticon.
2. Click See more detailslink.
3. Click theSoTGame.exe fileand click Restore. (If you can’t see the file select the dropdown next to View and select Last Scan)
4. Click Yeswhen asked if you want to restore the file.
5. Click OK.

Fix#1
1. Press the Windows key

\n3. Press OK as illustrated in the image below.
\n\n4. Reboot your PC.
\nYour mouse cursor issue should now be resolved.
\nRARE does not recommend lowering your security settings for whatever reason. Please create a ticket to the Sea of Thieves Support team should your issue not be resolved.
\nFix#2
\n1. Press Windows button + R to open the Run dialog box
\n2. Type gpedit.msc and press enter
\n3. From the Folders on the left select Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> Windows Components> Edge UI
\n4. Once viewing the Edge UI options right click 'Allow Edge Swipe' and select Edit
\n5. From the top left corner click Disabled and then press OK
\n6. Close the Local Group Policy Editor window and boot Sea of Thieves.
Fix#3
\n1. Open the run command window (Win + R)
\n2. Type 'regedit' and press ENTER
\n3. Navigate to 'Computer\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\'
\n4. If it doesn't exists, right click the editor background and select Add> Key. Change the name to 'EdgeUI'
\n5. Navigate to 'EdgeUI' key, right click the editor background and select Add> DWORD (32bit value), change the name to 'AllowEdgeSwipe' and set it to 0

\nIf you're having trouble downloading Sea of Thieves from the Windows Store, there are a few things you can try:
\nReset the Microsoft Store
\nYou can use the steps below to refresh the Store which will clear the cache and refresh your library and permissions. This fixes the majority of cases.
\n- \n
- Close the Microsoft Store app if you have it open. \n
- Click Start and type \"wsreset\", without quotes. \n
- Right-Click on the command and click \"Run as Administrator\". If the Windows permission box appears, click \"Yes\" or \"Run\". \n
- A black MS-Dos screen will appear for a few seconds. Wait for it to disappear and the Store will automatically open. \n
- Attempt to install Sea of Thieves \n
Other possible solutions:
\n#1 - Install to a different hard drive
1.When viewing the Sea of Thieves Microsoft Store page, clickInstall.
2. Onceprompted to choose a storage location, choose another drive which is not your default drive.
#2 - Perform a clean boot of windows (prevents any 3rd party apps from automatically booting stopping potential conflicts)

and delete all the files in there
3. Reboot your PC.

#4 - Reset the Installer
1. Bring up Task Manager (CTRL + SHIFT + ESCAPE)
2. Select the Services Tab
3. Find the Microsoft Store Installer
4. Right-click it and select Restart
5. Notification will appear to state Sea of Thieves is ready to play
#5 - Using Powershell command to complete installation
1.Download the content from the store, to the point where it fails at 99% / Install phase
2. Open PowerShell and run this command:

3. Click Retry in the store à This should now succeed

\nIf your PC's clock is out of sync with the rest of the world,it can cause an error. The best thing is to right-click the Clock on your Desktop and select \"Adjust date/time\". \nBelow are details for the various voice chat statuses when looking directly at another player. All of the below work both for your own crew and enemy crews:
\nFor the sake of clarity, we will refer to the players in the below scenario as You (Your character) and Fred (Crew mate/enemy).
Not talking
\n\nThe player will see no symbol above Fred’s gamer tag due to the following circumstances:
\n- \n
- \nFred has no microphone connected. \n
- \nFred has a microphone connected but is not talking. \n
- \nFred has their microphone muted.
Player talking
\n\nThe player will see a speech bubble symbol above Fred’s gamer tag due to the following circumstances:
\n- \n
- \nFred is talking and you should be able to hear him. \n
- \nYou may encounter our voice chat bug which means you would see this but not hear Fred, this can be fixed by unplugging and re-plugging in Your headset.\n \n
- If You see this and still hear no talking then you may have your audio setup incorrectly through the OS.
Player Muted

The player will see a symbol with a line through it above Fred’s gamer tag due to the following circumstances:
\n- \n
- \nYou are in an Xbox party and the symbol will appear when Fred is talking, when he is not you will see no symbol. \n
- \nYou have muted Fred and the symbol will be permanently above his gamer tag. \n
- \nYou have blocked Fred and the symbol will be permanently above his gamer tag. \n
- \nYou have set up your OS security settings to block all talkers. \n

\nIf the above solutions do not solve you chat issues then you may need to further investigate into the possible cause. We would recommend the following:
\nEnsuring your signed in accounts match
\nPlease ensure that the profile which owns and you use to play Sea of Thieves (or linked to Steam) is also signed in to your Xbox Console Companion app / Xbox (Beta) app.
\nReset your copy of Sea of Thieves (Microsoft Store Version)

- Type in Apps and Features\n \n

Verify integrity of local game files (Steam)

Check you NAT type

Restart your Windows Audio Service

- Scroll down your Services(Local) list and locate Windows Audio\n \n
- Right click Windows Audio and Select Restart\n \n
- Check that your Microphone is now working \n

Update your Microphone Device Drivers

- Right click each device and select Update driver. \n
Remove then update Microphone Device Drivers
\nSometimes you will need to completely remove old drivers before an update can work effectively. To do this:

- Expand the Sound, Video and Game Controllers options\n \n
- Right click the device and select 'Uninstall Device'. Once complete unplug the device from your PC \n
- Now either download the latest drivers from the company website and then plug your device back in. Or plug your device back in and let Windows automatically retrieve their own drivers. (this may be an option to try out both sets of drivers to see if it solves the problem) \n
- Once installed, right click the driver again and select 'Update Driver' (to ensure at the latest version) \n
- Proceed through your sound settings as detailed above to ensure that the device is configured as your default Input / Output device. \n
- Then once complete perform a reset of Sea of Thieves and boot the game again \n
Disable any VPNs
\nDisabling any VPNs which are in use have also been shown to solve this for certain users
